YEARS of campaigning by advocates for an upgrade to the Wangaratta Saleyards has paid off.
The Rural City of Wangaratta has included $2.2 million in its 2013-14 draft budget for the installation of a roof and soft flooring at the yards.
Two tenders have provided indicative quotes to take on stage one of the works that are subject to government support.
Council will borrow $1.7m and source $500,000 from the State Government to roll out stage one of the project – to provide soft flooring and roofing at the facility.
Stakeholders have been pushing for seven years for the upgrade to go ahead so the local livestock exchange can remain competitive into the future.
The roofing and flooring will lift the profile of the yards to meet OH&S and animal husbandry standards, something Yea and Shepparton yards have already achieved.
