Cash cow softens

WANGARATTA Livestock Exchange revenue last year was $2.6m down on 2012 figures.

It’s a reflection on a lull in the price of cattle that is expected to pick up when demand for Aussie beef strengthens closer to autumn.

The less revenue is despite 2959 more head of cattle being sold in the past 12 months than the year before.

Some $29.8m worth of cattle were weighed and sold at Wangaratta in 2013 compared to $32.42m in 2012.

The difference mainly lies with $2.7m less revenue in store cattle last year compared to 2012.

Both years were well down on the record year of 2011 when a massive $41.12m of cattle went through the gates.
