Saleyards the talking point

FRIENDS of Wangaratta Saleyards lobby group will this week meet with Rural City of Wangaratta administrators to put the case why a multi-million dollar redevelopment of the yards must go ahead.

Council administrators Ailsa Fox, Rodney Roscholler and Irene Grant, together with chief executive officer Brendan McGrath and infrastructure director Alan Clark are all expected to meet with up to five group representatives at the saleyards on Wednesday afternoon.

The lobby group requested the meeting to put what group spokesman David Evans said is a ‘strong and compelling case’ for council to commit to a full redevelopment of the saleyards.

It is believed the group will present a petition of support, as well as an overwhelming call from local cattle producers’ for the redevelopment, together with the financial windfall from the works.

While council has allocated $3.4m to new roofing and soft flooring at the saleyards in its 2014/15 draft budget, this is still to be approved by administrators and council management.

The issue was a hot topic during last week’s public forums on the draft budget.
