Yards out to market

THE  Rural City of Wangaratta Council will seek buyer or rental interest in a bid to dispose of the Wangaratta Saleyards to a private operator.

It will make the move at the same time it initiates a tender process in the coming weeks for works to upgrade the saleyards into the modern era.

Works would include a roof over the 15,000 square metre facility and soft flooring for cattle to bring the facility up to industry standards.

Council’s acting chair administrator Irene Grant said the reason for seeking interest in the sale or lease of the venue was to “mitigate the financial risk of the saleyards”.

“The risk is difficult to assess, but we are obliged to look at all the options to bring about the best outcome for the community,” Ms Grant told the Wangaratta Chronicle yesterday.

“It (selling the yards) could be a viable option, but council will make a decision when it has all the information at hand.

“We’re just doing a thorough job and it would be wrong to say we’re against the saleyards’ upgrade.”
