Fair cattle market

AROUND 500 head of cattle were sold at the Wangaratta Special Store Cattle Sale on Friday.

Christmont P/L (Pryor) had the highest steer price at $765 per head of Angus, while Hourigan Dairy Co had the highest price for calves and cows with a lot of Angus for $1190.

Wren R&K collected the highest price for heifers with a lot of Angus for $910 per head.

Livestock manager at Wangaratta’s Landmark, Daniel Fischer, said there was a lack of quality at Friday’s market, which could be put down to the annual weiner sale at the end of the month with a potential 2000 calves.

“You could say particularly with the lack of quality in today’s sale market with small lines of cattle and bred from non-vendors, there was a demand in steers and they were 10 to 20 cents dearer, especially with the 300-350kg calves,” Mr Fischer said.

“And those sort of prices reflect what we’ve seen at recent markets in Euroa and Wodonga.”
