Council seeks ‘guarantee’

RURAL City of Wangaratta council is still seeking a “guarantee” that producers will support the Wangaratta Saleyards, once it undergoes a near $4 million redevelopment.

Works on the saleyards will begin early next year if council’s three administrators accept their officer’s recommendation to award the preferred tender to Browns Wangaratta for $3.897m.

Administrators are to consider and vote on the recommendation at tomorrow night’s monthly meeting.

The preferred tender will see roofing built to cover 13,214m2.

The required $500,000 government funding has been promised by both the Coalition and Labor parties, along with almost $400,000 from a separate Living Victoria Fund due to water saving measures the revamped facility will bring.

But council wants a guarantee there will be continued patronage well into the future, regardless of the new $20 million Barnawartha exchange due to open in January 2015.
