Local stock ranks high at JBS awards

DAMIAN O’Keefe will probably be the best presented farmer at the next sale he attends after receiving a $1000 RM Williams voucher at last week’s JBS Australia Great Southern Supplier Group Awards at Crown Casino.

The O’Keefe property at Boorhaman finished second with a score of 93 out of 100 in the top lamb supplier section out of 950 suppliers with stock judged on weight, fat content, bruising, meat colour, MSA index, delivery and loyalty.

“JBS monitor the product closely and we need to be in a certain weight range,” he said.

“It was a thrill to be ranked second considering how many suppliers they have.”

The O’Keefe’s run a mixed farming business with around 3500 1st cross ewes with 50 per cent of their lambs going to JBS.

“I’m pretty happy for a farmer,” Damian said.

“We’ve had a good start to the season with rain and although we will still be feeding a few sheep for the next couple of weeks it’s not looking too bad.

“And the voucher will top up my wardrobe nicely.”
