Farmyard shift

THE outlook for agricultural enterprises in the region continues to follow a positive trajectory despite some significant shifts between the sectors in the last decade.

Figures supplied by the Rural City of Wangaratta sourced from economic development agency REMPLAN show that since 2010 there has been a reduction in the number of dairy businesses in the local region – from 41 in 2010 to only 15 in 2016.

However, over the same period the number of businesses operating in the grain sector has risen from 15 in 2010, to 46 in 2016.

While the number of sheep-only businesses has remained steady for the last decade, the number of beef and mixed enterprises has steadily increased, with beef-only up by 14 per cent and sheep and beef up by 16 per cent.
