GAPSTED Estate tasted success at the 2024 Royal Queensland Wine Awards, with its Alpine Road 2023 Pinot Grigio awarded Best Pinot Gris/Grigio Wine of Show.
Andrew Santarossa, CEO and chief winemaker at the family-owned winery on the Great Alpine Road, said his team was "incredibly proud of this achievement".
"Winning the Trophy for Best Pinot Gris/Grigio Wine of Show at the Royal Queensland Wine Awards is a recognition of our relentless pursuit of excellence," he said.
"We are dedicated to showcasing the unique qualities of Pinot Grigio and consistently setting the standard for this variety in Victoria."
Mr Santarossa said Pinot Grigio is a variety known for its versatility and refreshing character, and is continuing to gain popularity in Australia.
He said the Alpine Road 2023 Pinot Grigio exemplifies the variety's qualities with its zesty acidity, vibrant fruit flavours and crisp finish.
"The vineyards of our long-term growing partners in Victoria provide the ideal terroir for growing premium Pinot Grigio grapes," Mr Santarossa said.
"The soils and climate, combined with meticulous vineyard management and innovative winemaking techniques, allows us to produce wines of exceptional quality and character."
Mr Santarossa said Gapsted Estate is renowned for producing exceptional wines from alternative grape varieties that thrive in Victoria’s Alpine region, such as Pinot Grigio, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Prosecco as well as the iconic Saperavi.
He said the winery's Alpine Road range of wines looks to take people on a journey, just like the Great Alpine Road stretching from Wangaratta, through the alpine Valley and over the alps to the coastal settlement of Bairnsdale.
Alpine Road 2023 Pinot Grigio retails for around $20.
