Cattle prices take slight fall for last sale

CATTLE prices took a slight decline as producers were out for their last chance to cash in on the Wangaratta Monthly Store Cattle Sale for 2022, with the sale being held Friday morning.

Some 1100 cattle, 350 more than advertised, came out at the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange where average prices for the day saw 370kg calves going for $4.80 per kg and 400kg black steers for around $5.10 per kg.

Corcoran Parker cattle agent Reiley Murtagh said rising prices were tougher on producers due to costs for feed.

"There is a lot of cattle, a lot of beef at the minute in circulation, which has just had a total impact on our young domestic cattle as well," he said.

"There is a bit of water about, but I don't think it's having much of an impact, maybe it is having a little impact where the odd farmer isn't buying some but in the great scheme of things with feedlots and any farmers buying on a weekly basis, it's not doing a whole lot."

Cattle farmer James Parton brought 11 head of Angus steer at nine to 10 months old to the sale from his Benalla property.

Mr Parton said he has had to work hard in the recent months due to a wet November dampening his property.

"It's been a bit hard because it has been so wet... we've had a lot of trouble with pugging (hooves hardening the wet soil) and pastures have been damaged," he said.

"I've got to re–sow it in the autumn, I've just put 95 dry cows out for a month just to get it back up a bit, let it have a bit of a spell."

Mr Parton said he while he was a bit disappointed to fall short of his desired $2000 per head at the sale, earning $1850 per head, he was happy enough on the day, and hopes to cash in on the bigger weaner sales early next year.

"I've got about 15 heifers to go into the February sale and then I've got some stud bulls that I'll be looking to sell in April," he said.

Mr Murtagh said with the big weaner sales coming up in the new year, he doesn't expect prices to drop lower than they are now.

"There are no more sales in Wangaratta this year and going into the new year we are going to have all of our weaner sales so you have bigger, better lines of cattle on the market which tend to sell for a premium," he said.
