7500 of best cattle in the region set to be auctioned

LOCAL vendors are gearing up for a massive week of sales with up to 7500 head of cattle ready to go under the hammer at the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange this week for the Blue Ribbon Weaner Sales.

Wednesday will see 4500 head of Angus and Hereford steers up for bidding and 3000 head of heifers on Friday up for grabs with both sales starting at 10:30am.

Prices have shown stability over the past month after correcting from "extremely highs" last year, with the average weaner calf selling from $1700–$1800 per head.

Docker–based cattle farmer Tony Simpson will be taking 30 head of Angus heifers to the Friday Blue ribbon sales.

Mr Simpson, who is a third generation farmer, said considering the challenges of last season's rain, his crop of cattle have presented well under the circumstances.

"The prices will be whatever it is, but the quality of the heifers is very good," he said.

"I would expect we would be getting a good result and they would be equal to anything else there."

Mr Simpson said his cattle had just started calving for the new season, with a bulk of his cows expected to calve in March.
