Bella ends junior world champs back on the podium

BELLA Pasquali added a glint of World U20 Championship silver to her gold, finishing her debut international meet with a stunning run in Sunday morning’s 4x400 women’s final.

Same as the mixed relay, Bella ran second in the women’s relay final and was handed the baton in third place trailing Italy and the United States.

But as they rounded the bend and converged into the inside lane, Bella had stormed away from the pack at the back straight and set up a sizeable lead for her team with the fastest split of the race, a staggering 51.42sec.

Her split shaved a further second off her run in the mixed relay final, which was the fastest of any women in that race.

The Australian team qualified fastest in the heats the day prior running a season best 3:33.55min and were eyeing off gold with a one second lead at the last change of runners.

The highly touted American team snuck into the final and were bolstered by the addition of individual 400m bronze medalist Zaya Akins, who ran last in the final.

Victorian Sophia Gregorevic ran hard down the back straight to hang on to her lead, but Akins flew home, making up the gap at the final bend and by the time the two runners hit the final straight, USA had the title won.

Australia would finish with a time of 3:31.47min with Great Britain rounding out the podium.

Overall Australia came seventh in the medal tally with two golds in the five days of the championships, with Delta Amidzovski’s long jump win accompanying Bella’s mixed 4x400m relay win at the top.
