Damaging, destructive winds expected throughout region

THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a severe weather warning on Sunday morning with damaging and destructive winds forecasted for parts of the North East.

BOM forecasts suggested wind gusts averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts to 100 km/h were possible from Sunday night into Monday morning for the North East ranges and parts of Alpine areas.

The destructive winds were expected to lash large parts of the state as part of a “vigorous” west to north-westerly cold front.

In the six hours to 4:50am on Sunday morning, BOM recorded peak wind gusts of 98 km/h at Mount Hotham Airport.

Winds were expected to ease across the state during Monday.

AusNet expected customers across the Seymour area may be affected with potential power outages.

Victoria SES reminded people should avoid travel if possible in the areas effected and stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
