More than 1200 homes without power in Myrtleford, Whorouly region

HOMES in the Myrtleford region remained without power on Monday morning as storms swept through on Sunday night.

Wind gusts of up to 39km/h hit the Bureau of Meteorology’s Wangaratta Airport recording station overnight as storms entered Wangaratta from around 6pm.

A total of 17.8mm was recorded from 6pm to 6:30pm with 20.2mm of rain falling in total.

According to AusNet’s outage tracker as of 10:30am on Monday, power has yet to be restored to more than 1200 properties in the Myrtleford and Whorouly area.

A total of 1138 homes were effected between Markwood and Myrtleford alone as of 7pm Sunday night, with properties in Gapsted, Bowmans Forest, Beechworth, Stanley and Murmungee also affected.

The estimated power restoration was slated for 4pm Monday for those properties.

A further 106 home had their power lost in Whorouly from 5:30am Monday morning with Ausnet crews assessing the outage.

A separate critical outage was reported at Whorouly with power crews due on scene at 9am on Monday.

Emergency crews were kept busy responding to fallen trees across the region.

The busiest of the SES Hume region crews were the Wangaratta unit who had 18 requests for assistance, with the Great Alpine Road, Eldorado Road and Warby Range Road being the hardest hit areas.

Scattered showers are forecast for the rest of the week, with up to 5mm forecasted in Wangaratta for Friday, August 30.
