Melbourne Cup visit provides good memories

TREMENDOUS fun was had by all as the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour visited Dederang and Myrtleford last Wednesday.

Community members relished the opportunity to get their hands on the $750,000 18-carat gold trophy for this year's Melbourne Cup.

Darren Alsop, co-ordinator at Dederang Recreation Reserve, said everyone had a great time at the celebrations in the morning.

"There were Clydesdale and carriage rides, which were very popular," he said.

"Everyone was having a great day out, enjoying the barbecue and drinks available and seeing the cup come to town."

The cup travelled to Myrtleford later that day for a presentation by former chief steward from the Victorian Racing Club, Des Gleeson, and photo opportunities for the townspeople were aplenty.

Local resident Kaelah Barnes said it was an amazing experience to see the trophy in her very own town.

"It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to hold the Melbourne Cup," she said.

"Our family loves horses and we are members of the Myrtleford Pony Club, but we don't have any dreams to get into the racing industry.

"We like show ponies.

"I laughed with another lady who was at the event who said that my girls would appreciate looking back at this moment in 30 years time."
