Woman remanded in custody following second alleged Wangaratta crime spree

A WOMAN allegedly went on a week-long crime spree days after she was bailed for a host of alleged thefts and break-ins across the North East.

The 29-year-old appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Monday where she was remanded in custody following a series of alleged offending while on bail.

Detective Senior Constable James Nelson of Wangaratta police said only two days after the defendant was bailed on October 3 at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to live with her mother in Ascot Vale, it’s alleged she stole a vehicle in Moonee Ponds.

The following day, she was charged with impersonating a police officer and kidnapping in Footscray, where she also allegedly obtained property by deception and stole another vehicle.

She was also charged with more thefts, another stolen vehicle and criminal damage in Maidstone.

Det Sen Const Nelson said on October 9 she was charged with an armed robbery in Braybrook, before allegedly committing a string of offences in Wangaratta.

The woman was charged with five separate counts of aggravated burglary across the rural city, along with drug possession and attempted burglaries on Thursday and Friday.

Det Sen Const Nelson said properties on Bronmar Street, Rowan Street, Green Street, Murdoch Road and Thomas Wedge Drive were targeted.

After she was bailed on October 3, she vowed to Magistrate Megan Casey she wouldn’t be going “anywhere near” Wangaratta again.

She was caught and arrested by Wangaratta police on Friday, October 11.

The new spree of alleged offending follows a series of charges last month, which included around 16 matters outstanding in court, spreading across the North East and Melbourne.

The alleged offending includes the theft of multiple belongings including a generator, fridge and a new phone from a homeless man’s campsite at Tarrawingee on September 13.

It’s also alleged she stole a 12-seater bus, used by charity Riding Develops Ability (RDA), in Myrtleford on September 12, as well as attempted burglaries at two Myrtleford residences on September 22 and 23.

She was also charged with a burglary in Beechworth.

On Monday the defendant did not apply for bail, with Magistrate Ian Watkins remanding the woman in custody and adjourning the matter to January 15 at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
