Over 30 years of breeding for best genetics on display at Mistletoe

MISTLETOE Limousins was established in 1993, progressing over decades of refined breeding to a predominantly polled herd using the best genetics sourced from Australia and around the world.

"The use of homozygous polled sires has embedded the polled gene in the herd whilst keeping the desired limousin traits of ease of calving, fertility, growth, muscle with fat cover (rib, P8 and intramuscular) and docility," said stud principal, Denis O'Connor.

"All animals are Breedplan recorded and part of the Limousin Assurance Program, and our females calve easily, and their progeny have very good growth."

A Mistletoe limousin demonstrates good temperament and is quiet, with the amount of fat cover that the market is looking for whilst still retaining high yield especially in the more expensive cuts.

"The female portion of the calves are recognised for their yield and are rarely discounted when compared to the male portion of the calves thus making similar money to the steers," added Denis.

Taking heifers and bulls to the Limousin National Show and Sale, the stud has experienced significant success.

"Winning the Supreme Exhibit at the National Show and sale in 2023 and following up in 2024 with Junior Champion Female and Reserve Champion Female has been rewarding," said Denis.

"However what is more rewarding is that all five animals sold to other studs to advance the genetics of their breeding herds vindicating our breeding programme.

"Our aim is to provide bulls with quality genetics for our commercial breeders."

This year once again Mistletoe will be participating in Stock and Land Beef Week, with the family-owned Greta-based enterprise open from 8am on Tuesday February 4.

On display on the day will be 18-month-old and two-year-old bulls for sale (semen tested) along with the 12-month-old bulls to view, females including siblings of the bulls and the Mistletoe show team for the 2025 Limousin National Show and Sale.

"You won’t just see bulls but also the females that the bulls were bred from," said Denis.

"Join us to have a chat and just see how far limousin cattle have progressed.

"We would love to catch up with previous clients, current clients and anyone thinking of using the limousin advantage in their herd.

"A bull with Mistletoe genetics will improve your bottom line."
