VICTORIA’S most successful Charolais stud over the last 10 years is throwing open the farm gate again this February, with Rangan Charolais welcoming visitors to their Charleroi property as part of Stock and Land Beef Week.
The open day takes place on Tuesday February 4, providing the opportunity to view the 40 all-polled bulls that will be going under the hammer at Rangan’s autumn sale, with stud sires and cow families also on display.
Graeme Cook, Rangan Charolais principal, said "several international sires as well as proven homebred sires will be in the line-up on the day and make up part of the draft at the stud’s 16th annual sale on March 21".
“In this year's draft we are offering up the number one indexing Charolais bull in the entire breed for marbling,” Graeme said.
“And last year a Rangan bull sold to stud for $50,000, a Victorian record for a Charolais bull.”

With Rangan retaining semen for in-herd use, those impressive genetics will be on the ground and available for viewing during Beef Week.
The 2024 sale saw 60 per cent of the draft sell between five and seven thousand dollars, with Graeme saying the sale represents a great opportunity for the stud’s commercial clients to secure top quality genetics at a good price point.

“All bulls are independently assessed for structure and temperament, and all lots are breedplan recorded, genomic tested and sire verified,” said Graeme.
“A Rangan Charolais bull is polled and early maturing, suiting southern grass-fed finishing systems,” he added.
Rangan’s grass-finished steers and heifers all have a very high MSA compliance into the JBS Grass Fed Program, with the steers dressing up to an impressive 60 per cent.
With these desired traits and delivering hybrid vigour into commercial enterprises, Rangan-sired livestock sell extremely well with the late November 2024 NVLX weaner sale indicative of the strong demand.
“Sold by Mansfield’s Butchers Flat, the Weekly Times made special mention of the yarding.
“The article read ‘a highlight was the draft from Butchers Flat, with their Charolais cross steers making 412 to 444 cents per kilogram liveweight and the heifer rates up to 380 cents per kilogram’,” said Graeme, obviously delighted for his client.
For Graeme it’s results like this that make his job worthwhile.
The success over the last ten years in particular and the growing demand for Rangan genetics is of course rewarding, however, it’s perhaps the thrill of a sale that delivers strong results for his commercial clients that gives him more satisfaction.
“Knowing that our clients' faith in our Rangan Charolais genetics was justified is what it’s all about,” he said.
